Day 38- Hollywood Studios

Today started early as we dropped the pups off for school. Since we were out, we decided to stop by Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort French Quarter to pick up some gluten free breakfast. Chef Raphael came out of the kitchen, and was happy to see us, as we got to meet him at a gluten free venue a few weeks ago! He took our order of gluten free Mickey waffles, and reminded us that they also have gluten free beignets… we had to order some beignets too! These are probably the best gluten free waffles I have ever had on Disney property, and I love the beignets! Yummy!

The weather is cooler today and we are off to Hollywood Studios! It is 85 degrees here in Florida and it is beautiful. There are blue skies and a soft wisp of clouds as you look through the palm trees.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios is nice, and the crowd is light today. Yes, there are still a lot of people, but there is room to enjoy walking and looking around during the day! Toy Story Midway Mania is our first stop! The FastPass+ line is really long; a family of 16 is in front of us. I love this ride!

At Toy Story Midway Mania, I met a really nice lady and her husband. The lady was sharing about her kids and grandkids. She said that one of her daughters stayed home until she got married at age 30. The lady shared that she loved those years with her daughter being home. I had to hug her neck; she is so sweet and shared a special love for her daughters! I love meeting people and hearing their stories!

We walk towards the Brown Derby and see the Mulch, Sweat, and Shears band driving by and setting up for their concert! The other evening we got to see them play! This is a fun show to watch. However, we remember it is dinnertime, and a quick place to grab a bite to eat is Backlot Express. We go up the indoor ramp and find a nice table by the windows. I didn’t know we could see the Star Wars Jedi Training Academy through the windows! This is a great place for your kids to participate in the activities and get to be a part of the show. (Note: There is an area nearby to sign up for the show early in the day if your kids want to participate. If you ask a cast member, they can help point you in the right direction.) It is so much fun to watch!

QUESTION!!! How many miles will you, or can you, walk in a day at a Disney Park?

One of the cast members at Backlot Express checked to see if we were doing fine, and we got to talk for a couple of minutes. I mentioned that a little girl was asking about how far we would walk today. I told her about 2 to 4 miles! The cast member smiled, chuckled, said that you can easily walk 7 to 10 miles a day! I totally agreed with him and said that I know we have walked at least that many miles in a day before. When you start your day at a Disney resort, you can easily walk half a mile to the restaurant for coffee, and half a mile back to your room. Then, half a mile to the catch the bus, then a quarter to a half a mile from the bus to the park gate. Before you even begin to enjoy the park, you could have easily walked 1-2 miles. If your children are not used to walking 8 to 10 hours a day, a stroller might be a good choice. My good friend and her family came with children, 5 and 10 years old, and by the end of the day, the 10 year old was in the stroller and the little 5 year old was being carried to the car. If your daughter isn’t a fan of strollers, maybe call it a carriage like Cinderella uses! If you have a little boy, maybe a chariot. It works.

Day 33- Fantasia Gardens Mini Golf & Pizza Planet at Hollywood Studios

Mini Golf day! We see the Fantasia Gardens Miniature Golf Course whenever we head to Hollywood Studios, so we’ve been looking forward to playing here.

This is a really great course! It has some pretty fun theming from Fantasia… Some of the holes have a special sound or surprise that happens, too! Today, I chose a purple golf ball, Tooti has pink, and Twinkie has green! There are two little guys with their mom following behind us, which makes it even more fun! We start on the first hole and off we go… Each hole has a fun riddle to read and gives you hints on the best place to hit the ball!

This afternoon is pretty busy since it’s Friday. It’s nice to hear the happy golfers on the course as we play!

Next, we are off to Hollywood Studios.  It is pretty close, in fact, just across the road! As we go through the parking gate, the cast member asked us what part of Texas we were from… “Dallas!” Found out she was from nearby Greenville and she was glad to see a fellow Texan!

The park is busy, but not too crowded as we walk through down Hollywood Boulevard. We noticed that the shops have put out some more Christmas merchandise! So beautiful!

We decide to eat at Pizza Planet! It is a fun quick service restaurant themed from Toy Story and there is even an arcade inside! They are fast and very accommodating for our gluten allergy! The gluten free pizza is great and we ordered sides of Caesar salad. While there is plenty of seating inside, we decided to enjoy the cool evening by sitting outside at one of many umbrella tables. You can see the Christmas store and the Stage One Company Store, which has a lot of Muppets merchandise, across the street!

It was a great day!  🙂

Day 31- Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater at Hollywood Studios

One month ago today, we began our journey of going to Disney for 365 days in a row! We are happier than a kid in a candy shop! Lord willing and the creek don’t rise, we are on our way and have 334 days to go. I love Florida life and living close to Disney, we can watch the fireworks from our front porch. It is so cool! Our pups enjoy watching them with us when we are at home and not at the parks.

Today, we chose to go to Disney’s Hollywood Studios; we haven’t had lunch, so Sci-fi Dine-in Theater Restaurant is sounding like the restaurant of choice for a good hamburger. We arrive with an hour to spare, so we walk around and see how the Christmas lights are coming along. Today I notice they have added the Christmas carolers in front of two buildings in the Streets of America. It is perfectly busy and I can hear some of the crowd singing as they exit the Frozen Sing-along, the funniest is a grandma acting out “Let it go!”  Cute!

Now, we check into Sci-fi Dine-in Theater Restaurant, it is so very busy. Quite a few folks are trying to see if there is availability, but you must have a reservation to be able to eat there in the late afternoon to evening times. I haven’t seen it this busy since the end of summer crowd. After about 25 minutes, they call us to be seated. We sit in a three-seat car that looks like a ’57 Chevy! Tooti and Twinkie are in the front seat, me in the next one. A little later, they seat someone in the third row!

I love it, as you look around, it is reminiscent of the days gone by with the wooden fence, the stars in the sky, and the speakers on the post for your car sound. I remember going to drive-in movies when I was a kid. Mom would pile blankets on the top of our station wagon, and we would have our pillows up top in the luggage rack! I am not sure how many movies I actually saw, seems that I fell asleep more times than not.

Anyways, back to the Sci-Fi Dine-in Theater. There is a full screen with vintage scary movies playing as your car hop takes your order, we got dairy free “milkshakes” and 2 gluten free burgers and a gluten free corned beef sandwich! YUMMY, they have the best French fries too! We finish our dinner and head out.

It is chilly tonight as we are heading back to the front of Hollywood Studios. It is busy, but not too crowded, a nice flow of people. We parked pretty close, so we walk about 10 minutes to our car and head home. I must remember a jacket, it is finally chilly at night! Let’s see: backpack, magic band, water bottle, umbrella, appropriate shoes, now to add a jacket for the sudden drop in temperatures! Yes, it is feeling like fall this evening.

Day 29- Hollywood Studios

Disney is always at the forefront of our reason for our stories… However, there are some funny things that go on behind the scenes. For instance, Twinkie was sick this week so it gives way for some funny things to happen. Like, Twinkie wanted a cup of hot tea, so she poured the hot water into her cup. She got the tea tin out, read it and set it back into the cabinet, set the timer and when it went off, she looked into her cup and there was no tea bag! hehe!

Sometimes, the funny things that happen aren’t always as funny until the second time around. The next night, I made a cup of Ginger Tea and put the tea bag in the cup, got the pups a treat, sat down and couldn’t find my hot tea.  The next day, I found my cup with the tea bag, and yes, I had forgotten to add water!

Back to today! We are off to Disney’s Hollywood Studios for Columbus Day… I love how organized the parking attendants are, I appreciate their efficiency and they are very helpful. Since we have been going daily, it’s always interesting to see where we park. Some days we are way out there at the very end of the row, and other days we’re only a few cars from the tram or smack dab in the middle. Today, it looked like the line was finished and I would be driving all the way to the very far end.  I began to turn into the lane and she waved me into the very first spot! Right there just steps away from the tram! Then, she filled in the next several spots beside us. YAY! Sometimes special little things like this make the day even better!

The tram was full and we had a jolly ride up to Hollywood Studios! It was busy going through bag check and the lines were busy scanning Magic Bands since there are Extra Magic Hours later tonight.  We started down Hollywood Boulevard; I love the Art Deco buildings, the colors and the beautiful style of that era.

We walked down Sunset Boulevard and people were flooding towards Fantasmic. The theatre was already full and standing room only. FastPasses are available for it, but it is so worth the wait and such a great show if you decided to see it without one! It is a beautiful and fun way to end the evening as you get to see so many characters in one place!

Then, we headed to the Streets of America. The streets are calm and sparsely populated. As we looked down the road, we noticed how many more decorations have been put up this week. I love seeing the Christmas lights being set up ready for that wonderful season!  I wanted to stop by The Writer’s Stop.  Tooti and I had coffee and looked at all of the books. There are a few I am totally going to add to my library… After coffee and looking at some of these books, we start toward the front gates.

In front of Mickey’s giant hat, there was Mulch, Sweat & Shears playing in the center and they are really, really good! The band recently celebrated 10 years of performances together. We stopped and enjoyed their performance and the cool way they brought in their stage! So, very inventive!

Day 23- Lost and Found & Hollywood Studios

I was having a celebration day! Want to go to Disney? Of course, but today it was cool enough to dig in the garage and find my box of clothes that has been packed since the move! Yep, celebrating a cool morning and finding my box!

Now, we have some exciting news! Last evening, Twinkie found that she had dropped a prized vintage eyeglasses case. She was heart broken and it was too late to check with Lost and Found. She did call the Winter Summerland Miniature Golf Course, where we were first, but they didn’t have one that had been turned in. Early this morning, she began her calls to Disney’s Lost and Found. She described where we were, what it looked like, and about what time she might have lost it. After several minutes I heard her screaming in happy tones! They had found it and it was waiting for her! Our first stop of the day is Lost and Found!

At the first of summer, I headed back to the hotel early, and left the kids to enjoy Extra Magic Hours with their company. I had the passing thought, “I hope they remember to get their stuff out of the storage locker.” When they arrived back to our room in the late hours of the night, they had totally forgotten our stuff. The next day, Twinkie and I began the journey of finding it. Magic Kingdom first, but the locker had been emptied and sent to Lost and Found, so we went there and were able to describe and claim our stuff! I was impressed, because the young mom in front of us had lost a baby shoe, she told them where and when, and they looked, but found nothing. Then, the granddaddy that was working asked if he could borrow the little shoe the mom still had and when he returned, he had the match! It was absolutely amazing that the tiny little shoe found its way home. She was so excited and thankful. We experienced that today! Celebration #2!

Now, we are happily off to Hollywood Studios. Our celebration lunch is at the Hollywood Brown Derby! We love their chopped cobb salad, the entree size is huge! We love the appetizer-sized one, and also had some wonderful gluten free rolls! Hollywood Brown Derby is so beautiful; they have taken the original Brown Derby and translated it into a Disney wonder! There are sketches of the old actors and actresses on the walls, there are pictures of the original Brown Derby; it is an elegant place to have lunch or dinner. Usually, you need to make reservations if you are planning to have a sit down meal. It was perfect.

We have a few minutes before Toy Story Mania, so I went to Walt Disney, One Man’s Dream: from Mickey Mouse to the Magic Kingdom! That will be a whole day’s blog! I love learning about Mr. Walt Disney, he made so many dreams come true. We’ll write more about that later.

Toy Story Mania is next, we have FastPass+. There is a test going on, and to ride today, you must have a FastPass. I enjoyed going through the line and seeing all of the décor. It is like you become the size of the toys; the game boards on the ceiling are huge, and you walk past the giant crayons and scrabble pieces. Mr. Potato Head is the cutest. I got the highest score I have ever had, 136,000 points!

We saw where the Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post had been, and we followed the signs to the new location! Oh, look, there is Olaf’s flower growing in the snow. Oh, wow, this area used to be the AFI store, near the Studio Backlot Tour, and it has been transformed into Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post and Frozen Funland! I Love the snow; you can even build real snowmen in the snow play area!

I heard the sounds of the city, the trucks and the car horns, as we were rounding the corner into the Streets of America! It is like stepping back in time, and as you look down the street, it is as though you actually have, complete with old buildings and vintage window décor! Love these streets! I cannot wait until the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights Christmas are lit!

I miss the sand sculpture of Olaf at the front gates, so we got a picture with the Hollywood Studios sign!  Although I miss Olaf, someday, maybe he will be back, I don’t know for sure, but I hope so.

Day 14- Epcot & Last Day of Frozen Fireworks at Hollywood Studios

It was pouring as we headed out for Epcot. Then, it stopped, poured, and stopped again as we neared the park. We parked on aisle 50 once again! How do we keep being directed to that parking aisle? No problem, I looked over the top of the trees for Spaceship Earth. Found it. Now, what’s the quickest path from point A (us) to point B (Spaceship Earth)? We found a new walking path and headed in. As we entered the park gate, there was a lady from South Africa that loved the kids’ Frozen shirts! As we talked, she was so nice that we asked if we could have a picture with her, and her son jumped into the pic too! Fun!

Off to the America Pavilion to watch Hanson, but the line was amazingly long. We waited for a little while and realized that the number of people in line already exceeded the number of seats in the theatre. We ducked out of the rain to sit in Italy for a few minutes. While we were there, we met a really nice couple with two beautiful daughters. It was fun talking and visiting with them!

This reminds me about the other night at Epcot. As we were leaving, I saw a little girl with a frown and tears rolling down her face. “Are they putting up your ‘carriage’? Oh! You’re a little princess and they are putting up your ‘carriage’.” She smiled and hugged the little railing near her and nodded. I had overheard her grandparents telling her to stop crying as they pushed the stroller away, but I knew that in her little heart she saw the stroller as her “carriage.” Thank you, Molly A., for letting me learn that little treasure from you and your family!

After Epcot, we planned to head to Hollywood Studios for the final Frozen Fireworks of the season! Frozen Fireworks it is.

We made it to Hollywood Studios and enjoyed the bustle of people waiting for the show to start. While we were waiting, we met another really nice family. The mom mentioned that the kids didn’t want to stay, but she was hoping the fireworks would be worth it. I told her they are absolutely worth it! When my kids were little, they would tell me, “I don’t want to do something,” and I would tell them, “That’s just fine, but I want to!” She laughed! They did stay and it was so worth it!

As the fireworks came to an end, it was snowing! All the way from Mickey’s sorcerers’ hat to the front gates it is snowing! I love meeting so many people.

Heading home, we realized we had six minutes before the Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party fireworks started; we could make it to the parking lot, catch the ferryboat over to Magic Kingdom, and see the Not So Scary Fireworks from the Ferry! It took me eight minutes; my kids can walk faster than fast. They made it to the entrance of the ferry and they were going to wait for me. I hollered, “See if they can wait for me!” I was a little ways back, but the deckhand teased me and said that my kids had told me to shut the gate; don’t let mom in! Funny guy!

We hurried onto the ramp and up the stairs to the front of the ferry and watched the Not So Scary fireworks from the stem of the boat!!! WOW! This show even has panoramic fireworks! It is so beautiful!

Day 13- Dapper Day at Hollywood Studios

Best day ever!!  We headed for Hollywood Studios for Dapper Day.  It was so much fun to so many people in their vintage finery!  When we arrived in the early afternoon, the parking lot was already filling up!  There were Dapper-Dressed Ladies and Dapper Men everywhere you turned!  So fun!  We boarded the tram and headed towards the park entrance, chatting with a bunch of people around us about what Dapper Day is about.  You can read more about it at www.dapperday.com. Oh, look!  We got photo bombed by a really great couple!

As we walk down Hollywood Boulevard, we see more Dapper Day Ladies!  The park is beautiful and I love the deco buildings.

The first ride is Toy Story Mania, one of my favorite rides!  The whole time you are walking through the line, it is like you are walking beside giant toys.  You get to wear 3D glasses, which look great with my Dapper Day dress.  Tooti won the game today, Twinkie came in second, and I came in third place.

The Citizens of Hollywood were gracious as always, and we took a picture beside Mimi Kaboom in her beautiful car.  Our next destination was the 50s Prime Time Café!  We called ahead so we could have Gluten Free Fried Chicken!  We were seated and the people eating in that area were so funny; we had a blast!  The décor there looks a lot like Great Grandma’s kitchen did.

The Streets of America were so amazing with Dapper Ladies and Gents posing with groups of people.  We were stopped several times as we were invited to take pictures with curious onlookers.  It was just so fun!  As we headed for the Studio Backlot Tour, we saw the perfect picture: a lovely lady and her brother-in-law talking next to the fountain!  Cute! (Later, we saw her and her husband on the Backlot Tour, too!)

Waiting across from the Studio Backlot Tour was a Dapper Day meetup as it neared 4PM.  We joined the gathering as we waited to go into the ride.  You see, the Studio Backlot Tour is closing after today, so we had to get a final ride to say goodbye.  You go through the building where they sew costumes, build sets, and keep cool old vehicles from previous productions.  Then you go past the stunt area, my favorite is you get to see the back of the Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show.  The cars were racing into the staging area and it was awesome as they showed their driving skills.

On our way to grab coffee at the Writer’s Stop, what’s that we see?  Oh, look, a Chevy outside of the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater!  After continuing on to the Writer’s Stop, we took a coffee break before we headed over to the Dapper Day meetup at The Great Movie Ride!  We even saw a girl that we actually know… it was so fun to see her!

We strolled around the park and enjoyed the evening.  The Frozen Fireworks were absolutely fabulous, beyond words.  We sat outside of the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular as we watched the Frozen Fireworks; they are so overwhelmingly beautiful, I found my eyes were tearing up!  The last night for Frozen Fireworks is tomorrow, Sunday.  I am truly going to miss them.

Day 10- Hollywood Studios, By way of Epcot

We had an absolutely fun afternoon at Hollywood Studios.  We did take the long way around, but it was a fun trip.  We started at Epcot, parked, and walked 3/4 mile to Rinse. We saw them at the Flower and Garden Festival and a few weeks later picked up some of their natural body products at the America Pavilion in Epcot. Their natural deodorant has become a favorite and it holds up to the FL heat and humidity so well. Today, we picked up some roll-on essential oils, called Thievery, and it smells amazing! We grabbed a cup of hot tea and went to catch the boat from Epcot to Hollywood Studios.  As we were walking out the gate, we saw the boat was leaving, so we walked to the Boardwalk to catch it there.  On the way, I saw a mom taking a picture of her daughters.  We stopped and I asked her name; she was so cute.  Her name was “Mae.”  Oh, my!  My daughter met them on Day 7 at Tony’s Town Square!  I love when we run into someone we’ve seen before. Then, we made it to the dock and caught the boat.

Once inside the gates, our first ride is the Studio Backlot Tour.  We heard they will be closing it and I wanted to see it before it is gone!  The last time we went, Tooti and Twinkie were in the skit, and it was so much fun.  After the skit, you walk through movie prop storage area; it is very interesting.  Outside you catch a ride through the backlot and get to see the behind the scenes of the movie world and some Disney things like costumes and a wood shop. We had half an hour before our FastPass for the Toy Story Midway Mania ride, so we grabbed a quick meal while we waited.

Off to Toy Story Mania!  Oh, look, the Green Army Man!!!  I need a selfie with him!  Thank you!  I love the Army Men!  Toy Story Mania is one of my favorite rides.  I love the 4D ride, it is like being in an immersive video game that spins you around as you try to rack up the most points. A LOT of fun! The lines can be long, so it’s best to try to get a FastPass+ scheduled ahead of time.

Fun time! Then, we were off to catch the boat back to Epcot.  We met a young family whose son will be 5 in a few days and is enjoying his first time to Disney!  Got on the boat and sat at the back, it’s open and you can see all around.  A young family came out from inside the boat and I got to meet them.  We talked a little and their children were so well behaved; you could tell how much they are loved. We landed at Epcot, got off, and headed for the entrance.  Epcot was bustling and so crowded since they have extra magic hours until 11:00pm.  We got to the car and then stopped in the Magic Kingdom parking lot to watch fireworks. A very relaxing day today!

Day 2- Hollywood Studios

Hollywood Studios, what can I say about it? It has more fun skits and funny drama on the streets than your average theme park.  We saw Evie Starlight in her cute white car with her driver!  We waited a few minutes watching her hold babies for a picture, little girl climb up and sitting with Evie as she is talking in a 1940’s voice.  We talked for a minute as she asked what Twinkie’s name is, that started a fun exchange!  Then, Tooti went to get her picture and I heard, “Well, if her name is Twinkie, what is your name?”  The driver said, “Zinger?”  “Haha, my name is Tooti.”  Oh, that got Evie to talking and said that she wanted to be in our family, and asked what nickname would we give her.  After a few seconds, I said, “Bubbles!”  She loved it.  Fun time.

We started to walk off when a little dude came from behind me telling her it was his Birthday, she came down and took his little hand and they walked to the center of the road and she yelled, “Hey everyone this is his Birthday, he will be 5.  Say Happy Birthday!”  Too cute, then she told him that was his gift and then, gave him a kiss on his cheek! His dad was out of battery on his phone, so we offered to take the pic, and his mom just walked up as we were getting ready to email it to them!  FUN!

Walked up to the cross street and saw the “Funniest” Citizens of Hollywood, listened to their skit of impromptu jokes, really funny.  Then we looked around at one of the stores nearby.  I love the architectural style of the building!  This store carries a good selection of merchandise, including the Disney Vera Bradley line and Disney bracelets by “Alex and Ani” (made in the USA!).  My girls love their bracelets, especially since they are fun to collect and you can wear different ones at once!

Before leaving home, we ate a small snacky lunch and we decided to grab a meal at the ABC Commissary.  Disney is testing a new gluten-free menu at a few select locations and this was one of them. (Usually, we have to speak with the chef or a coordinator and they will go over options that we can have and sometimes we have to read the ingredient list from their special binder as well before we make our selections, so this is really nice!) We picked the GF chicken tenders and split two between the three of us since each basket comes with four chicken tenders each… More than enough for one person!

While we had a moment to wait for the food, we checked out the wait times… Got to love this time of year!  Toy Story Mania only had a 45 minute wait… It’s usually at least 90+ mins. during busier times.

Wait TImes…

We ended up in the Streets of America, I love it, my favorite is all of it, but I love seeing San Francisco.  As we were walking we saw the Frozen Show Ticket for the sing-a-long.  Only about 45 minute wait, so we grabbed a cup of coffee at the Writer’s Stop. We sat for a few minutes as Twinkie browsed the books. Then it was off to the Sing-Along!

As the Sing-Along started, I found myself tearing up.  I thought why am I tearing up so much?  Then, I listened quietly and heard the voices of all the Dads and Granddads singing along with the little ones!  Oh, my!  My tears were huge to hear these mighty voices singing along side their kiddos.  The play is so worth it.  I would not miss this for anything!
